Report: Town 2-2 Walsall

9 March 2013

Town - 2 (Williams '11, Ferry '79)

Walsall - 2 (Grigg PEN '30, Paterson '90)

TOWN conceded a last-minute equaliser as they were held 2-2 at home by Walsall.

Andy Williams and Simon Ferry notched for Swindon before the visitors twice hit back to level the scores.

Kevin MacDonald named the same XI that had won at Coventry seven days earlier. Simon Ferry retained his place on the right side of midfield among the starting XI while Luke Rooney, who had set up the winner at the Ricoh Arena, had to be content with a place among the substitutes.

In an action-packed first half, it was the visitors who created the first clear-cut opportunity with Febian Brandy heading wide of the far post after being left unmarked.

With eleven minutes on the clock, Town took the lead. Andy Williams saw his cross deflected back to him. As he shifted it onto his left foot, his driven effort ricocheted off Saddlers’ skipper Andy Butler, thumped off the turf and looped into the far corner over the sprawling Aaron McCarey.

Tommy Miller and Alan McCormack both saw efforts well saved before the visitors drew level on the half-hour.

In the aftermath of a corner being half-cleared, Tommy Miller brought down a yellow shirt and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Wes Foderingham guessed the right way but could not keep out Will Grigg’s well-placed penalty.

Before the half was over, Gary Roberts had sidefooted Williams’ cross over the bar as Town went in search of a second goal.

After the break, Town were on the attack from the off and Aden Flint nodded wide from a corner.

Alan McCormack twice went close with dipping efforts that arrowed over the crossbar.

After battling away for the majority of the second half, Town nudged ahead courtesy of Simon Ferry. Substitute Adam Rooney’s shot was spilled by the goalkeeper and Ferry was on hand to hook home from inside the box.
