Cooper: A different type of win

21 September 2013

MANAGER Mark Cooper spoke to the media after Town's 3-2 derby win over Bristol City.

On the win…
It was too frantic for me. First of all it was a fantastic game for supporters to watch. If you had paid money to watch that then you haven’t been short changed. We had to win a different type of game today. It was a local derby, it was a battle and it was very pleasing.

On the performance…
When we did pass it we got really good. We didn’t keep smashing it onto Aden Flint’s head, we got it into Ranger and he’s smashed it in. When we play and pass the ball quickly we’re a threat. I’m pleased for the boys that came into the team today. We suffered injuries in the week which disrupted our preparations. I thought Louis Thompson and Nicky Ajose were superb.

On Nicky Ajose…
He’s been at Man United and we’re trying to rebuild his confidence. He’s not played a lot of games and he’s another one that we’re trying to rebuild.

On goals conceded…
Another set piece we didn’t deal with and a free header for Aden Flint. I told them not to give City any encouragement and we did that. Most of my coaching was all about Jay Emmanuel-Thomas not coming on to his left foot and he did. We played with hearts not heads and that’s not good in a local derby but we’ve come out of it in the end.

On the second half …
We let them know at half time that the way they were playing isn’t acceptable and if we went back to way we usually play we’d get some joy. We looked pretty good in the second half. I’m pleased after last Saturday when I just couldn’t believe we didn’t get anything then today we don’t play and we win that’s what makes football what it is and the game we love.
