Ladies' Season Opener

23 August 2014

THE Town Ladies open the new season with a home game against Saint Nicholas from Bristol on Sunday, writes Roger Reeves.

This be will the Town’s first game in the newly formed FA Women’s Premier League. The League was formed because the Super League set up a second division leaving the old Premier League short of clubs making it necessary to re-organise the Women’s winter League. Two Premier Leagues have been set up; one in the North and the other in the South. These two Leagues are supported by four Division One Leagues; one in the Midlands and North feeding into the Northern Premier League and clubs in the South East and South West Leagues being promoted into the Southern Premier League. The Division One Leagues comprise of clubs in the old Combination League. The whole new set up is organised by the FA at Wembley.

The Town have worked hard in the close season with friendlies against Portsmouth, Cardiff Met (a University team) Swansea City and Cardiff City.

The opening game will be an interesting one because the two sides have never met before as Saint Nicholas are newly promoted from the South West Regional League. The Saints will be keen to establish themselves in the higher League having been close to promotion for several seasons.

Captain Chyna Collings said: "The team and I are very excited about the start of the new season. Pre-season has gone well and everyone is raring to go."
