Ladies Through In Plate Competition

1 December 2014

SOUTHAMPTON SAINTS - 1
SWINDON TOWN - 2

Swindon Town eased their way into the next round of the Women’s Premier League Plate Competition with a two goals to one victory over Southampton Saints in Hampshire, writes Roger Reeves.

Both sides began cautiously with few opening created. The Town eventually broke the dead lock in the 23rd minute when Meg Vella latched onto Meg Attenborough’s through ball to put the Town ahead. The Town began to take control and Saints 'keeper Hannah Haughton did well to save from Beth Thompson and Chyna Collings.

In the second half the Saints pushed forward looking to get an equaliser and were reward when Catherine Browning hooked the ball into the net following a scramble after a free kick. The Town hit back but were unable to add to their tally. With extra time beckoning the Town got that important winner when Ellie Maynard met Michelle Rich’s corner to score with a fine diving header.

After two away victories in the Plate Competition the Town will hope to be rewarded with a home tie in the next round.
