Jones: "A Step Up"

9 July 2014

MATT Jones says that the Town squad has helped him to settle in as he takes his first steps in professional football.

The former youth team scholar told STFC Player that he now has to adapt to the step up in class.

“They’ve been good,” he admitted. “(They have) looked after me and helped me through things and spoke to me if I needed help with things but I was nervous coming in Monday morning.

“It’s just a step up really. The players are quicker, they see things quicker and the knowledge of the game is much better so you’ve got to adapt again and I’ve got to learn from more experienced players than myself and just try to keep up.

“It was a hard summer, going away and still having to keep fit and run. It’s strange knowing you’re going back to be a footballer again and you have to look after your body and things like that. It’s good you know you’re coming back to something you love doing.”

After a summer unlike any other he has experienced before, the youngster recalled the moment he was told he would be getting a professional deal.

“Getting told, obviously it was just a great moment to be honest. I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t be too happy about it because you’ve got kids that are upset because they got let go but it’s a great day, going home and telling the family.”
