Report: Chichester 1-1 STLFC

10 March 2014

THE Town Ladies had a trip to Sussex to face unbeaten Chichester City in the South West Combination League and returned with a share of the points after a 1-1 draw, writes Roger Reeves.

The Town kicked off on a warm sunny afternoon and Georgia Walters soon brought the City 'keeper Hannah McNamara into action. A quick City throw-in caught the Town unprepared but Robyn Levett in the Town’s goal did well to push the ball clear.

Play was evenly contested and a long clearance from the City defence put Abbey Shrubb clear but Town 'keeper Robyn Levett saved at the expense of a corner. Michelle Rich and Chyna Collings set up Georgia Walters but her shot was saved and then again Georgia Walters found space to shoot but her shot was wide of the target.

The Town started the second half on the attack and Beth Thompson tested Hannah McNamara in the City goal. At the other end, Abbey Shrubb tried a shot from distance and then Alice Smith did well to block the same player's strong drive. City began to have a good spell but Michelle Rich and Sam Quinn in the centre of the Town’s defence held firm.

In the 57th minute Georgia Walters was fouled in the box but her penalty was saved by the City 'keeper who dived smartly to her left. Seven minutes later the Town did take the lead. Following a Georgia Walters corner the ball fell to Chyna Collings who coolly tucked it into the corner of the net.

Lauren Cheshire carried the ball clear of the Town’s defence but her final shot flew over the crossbar. In the 77th minute the sides were level when substitute Kally Ambler scored with a low drive. Kristy Willett had a chance to put the home side in front following a mix up in the Town’s defence but she scooped her shot wide. In the dying minutes Robyn Levett confidently held Lauren Cheshire rising shot.

In was a good, all-round performance by the Town against a strong physical side.
