TOWN’S Massimo Luongo says that being included in Australia’s preliminary World Cup squad is the icing on the cake after a successful season in Wiltshire.
Speaking to the assembled media last week at the Socceroos’ training camp Down Under, the midfielder declared that he would make the most of the experience.
He said: “Training this afternoon has really made it stick (that I’m part of the preliminary squad). Above everything (I need to show) my enthusiasm; that I want to be here and want to be on the pitch. I’m sure he (the manager, Ange Postecoglou) knows what type of player I am, I just need to be myself.
“It’s been a big year for me as a footballer: playing in League 1 has developed me in a certain way. This year has been a successful one personally and being here is the icing on the cake.
“I've only had 15/20 minutes of international experience. I didn’t think of international football until recently. I’ve always focused on my club and playing week-in, week-out. I’m here just to learn and get the experience, do my bit and show what I’m all about.”
The Socceroos are due to play South Africa in a World Cup warm-up match at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium on 26th May.
