WOOTTON BASSETT TOWN - 1
THE Town Ladies retained the Wiltshire County Women’s Cup with a seven goals to one victory over Wootton Bassett Town at Calne FC.
Wootton Bassett kicked off on as sunny afternoon but it was the Town who almost got the first score when Amy Baker’s shot beat the keeper but Jenny Gavin cleared the ball off the goaline. The Town did find the net after three minutes when Michelle Rich ran onto a through ball from Beth Thompson to shoot low into the net. The Town doubled their score seven minutes later when Beth Thompson and Ellie Maynard combined well to create an opening for Michele Rich to find the net again.
Town were enjoying the better of the play and Bassett keeper Sarah Humphries did well to hold Amy Baker’s cross. Beth Thompson found an opening in the Bassett defence to score number three. Sarah Humphries in the Basset goal did well to push out Michelle Rich’s shot but the ball fell to Sally Butterfield who coolly tapped it into the net. At the other end, Town keeper Robyn Levett was well tested by Natasha Burson’s shot from distance.
Within a minute of starting the second half Bassett pulled a goal back. Laura Jefferies’ free kick was met by Samantha Wood who smashed it into the top corner of the net. Chyna Collings played a neat ball into Beth Thompson whose shot was well saved by Sarah Humphries in the Bassett goal. In the next Town attack, Sarah Humphries pushed Michelle Rich’s shot onto the cross bar but Ellie Maynard was on hand to nod the rebound into the net.
In the 58th minute Beth Thompson headed in Michelle Rich cross. Bassett got a free kick just outside the Town’s area but Natasha Burson’s shot was too high. Four minute from time the Town took their tally to seven when Beth Thompson ran through the Bassett defence to score with a low drive.
