Report: Supermarine 2-1 Town

7 July 2015

TOWN'S first outing of pre-season ended in a 2-1 defeat at Swindon Supermarine.

A strike from Michael Smith was sandwiched in between a goal in either half from the home side.

Mark Cooper named two sides containing a mixture of trialists, first team players and scholars.

Jon Obika had the net early on and spurned a good opportunity moments later but it was the home side who took the lead after a bright opening. Town failed to clear their lines after a Marine corner and Luke Hopper was on hand to turn the ball home from close range.

Town's best opportunities all ended with efforts off target. Jermaine Hylton lashed over while Jon Obika did likewise after a neat turn on the edge of the box. Yaser Kasim also picked out the trees behind the goal from a free-kick.

An almost completely changed line-up at the start of the second half started in a positive fashion: Lee Marshall's neat through-ball almost reached Michael Smith but the pass was just too heavy for the striker.

It was Smith who would net the equaliser for Town shortly afterwards. Josh Cooke's burst through midfield saw him lay the ball off for Marshall. The midfielder's pass picked out Miles Storey who had snuck in behind the full-back and it was his cross that was met by Smith at the far post to make the scoreline 1-1.

Cooke was involved again moments later but couldn’t quite turn a cross from the right goalwards after making an intelligent run inside the box.

After chances for both sides came and went, it was Marine who would make the crucial breakthrough shortly before the end of proceedings. Another corner from the Town right caused problems inside the box and Sam Morris rifled in a shot from just inside the box.

Miles Storey carved out a final opportunity for the visitors but fired his effort over the crossbar.
