Ling: Plenty Of Work To Be Done

7 November 2015

MARTIN Ling spoke to the media after Town's FA Cup defeat at Rochdale.

On the result...
It won't be easy. I thought the best team won. In the first half we passed it but with no purpose. I felt it went better for us in a diamond. I feel at the moment, two men up front gives us more options. There's plenty of work to be done but there's genuine honesty in the dressing room. None of them give up and they're all prepared to rectify the situation we’re in. It wasn't good enough today. We’ll all accept that as a team, as a staff and as a collective unit. It was not as good I hoped or expected but it showed me there’s work to be done and highlighted a few areas we could have done better.

On the goals...
It (the first goal) was very scrappy. I feel in the first half they had the upper hand and in the team talk at half time we said we need stay in it as long as we can, let's not chase it and chuck it away then a minute in (to the second half) we're 2-0 down.

On changes to the playing system...
It’s a cup game so it's not effected the league position. It's given me an insight to see a game now. I felt when we played one up front it made us not as fluid as with two. Whatever system we play it will be with two strikers. We want to pass it but you’ve got to pass it with a purpose and if you've not got a frontman to feed off you won't get in the final thrird to score a goal. That’s what stood out for me today so I changed it. I want to keep the ball and pass it but my motto is 'pass with a purpose'.

On the positives...
The lads kept going throughout the game and never gave up. There's disappointment in the dressing room. Sometimes you have to look at it on a Monday morning but it gives you food for thought. Work starts early on Monday morning for Scunthorpe.
