Smith: A Great Moment

8 September 2015

TOM Smith has described scoring his first senior goal against Crewe last Saturday as a 'great moment'.

The second year scholar was summoned at the break to make his first league appearance of the season and would go on to find the net with a thumping effort from the edge of the box that hauled Swindon level before goals from Wes Thomas and Nicky Ajose sealed an away day victory for Mark Cooper’s men.

“I was pleased to get the goal," he recalled. "It was a great set by Wes Thomas - it was a great moment.

“I knew (I was coming on) at half time. I got the call from the fitness coach. He called me over - I was a bit shocked. The gaffer gave me a few good words which was always good to hear. I came on, played well and it was good to get the goal."

He continued: “It was on the Friday that I found out - I was preparing for the Under-18s game against Oxford then I found out I was with the first team which was a bonus.”

Having been with Swindon Town from a young age, Smith says that he is grateful for the experience with the senior squad.

“I’ve been here since I was eight years old,” he said. “I’ve pretty much been here through the whole academy. I had to work my way up. I was quite fortunate to be involved with the first team in my first year so I’ve got a bit of experience which was good. Then this year I was involved at Newport which was a good experience.”
