LW: We came alive when the game was over

13 August 2016

LUKE Williams spoke to the media after Town’s 3-1 defeat at Chesterfield.

On the defeat…
We have a style of play which ultimately did allow us to score a consolation but we’ve played the same way for a long time and on several occasions scored goals. We had 20 attempts on goal at QPR and ten were on target. We were poor today.

On the performance…
It’s difficult to understand but I saw what the spectators saw which was a weak and pathetic-looking team at times in the first half, lacking energy and drive, no conviction in passing, no conviction in our defending. We came alive when the game was over. It’s too easy to look at Wednesday (as an excuse). There’s no way you can compete in League One if you feel sorry for yourself that you went to extra time in the week. I told the players I’m shocked because I didn’t see that coming. Yes, some dips in some areas but not to that extent. It’s a huge shot across the bows. I expect us to perform to a certain level.

On Jordan Stewart’s performance…
He showed us what we were missing as a team: ambition to try and create something out of nothing, at times and willingness to compete and ride tackles.

On Darnell Furlong’s goal…
That’s one positive, I suppose. It’s very difficult to find any but that was pleasing to see him come on and score.

On the injury to Luke Norris…
He’s turned his ankle so we won’t know until the ligaments in the ankle have been examined more closely. It’s very unfortunate with Jon Obika being out as well. I’d be amazed if he was available for Tuesday (against Gillingham).
