Speaking to the media ahead of the weekend, the midfielder believes that Town need to take the confidence from recent performances into the game in Essex.
"Some games we’ve made it harder for ourselves but it's important we go in with a winning mentality and continue to plan for this game as best we can," he said. "They'll be looking to get a win so they’ll be fighting. They wont be feeling sorry for themselves. It's going to be a tough game and we’ve got to make sure we prepare for that.
"Within the group we know we’re good enough to push up the table but results haven’t shown that as much this season but we like to think the performances are coming back. Hopefully we can continue that and take it into Colchester."
The midfielder also reflected on last Saturday's draw with high-flying Gillingham.
"We like to play a certain way but you can tell within first ten minutes it was going to be a battle so it was important we stuck together and ground the result out which we did," he said. "They’re a really good team and I thought we coped with it well.
"We always look for the perfect performance but it just wasn’t going to be one of those days. If you can play well that’s the perfect way to go about it - we ground it out and to come away with 0-0 is a vital point so the boys were buzzing with it."
