Williams: An Incredibly Poor Performance

LUKE Williams spoke to the media after Town's 6-0 defeat at Scunthorpe.

On the defeat...
I don’t fully understand the reason for the incredibly poor performance. I know we’re missing some important players but I don’t think there is any reason why we should perform that badly. I can only imagine it’s a lack of concentration - that peoples' minds have wandered because they feel like there’s nothing left to play for and that’s not acceptable. People underperforming is one thing but people not concentrating on the game and not being involved in every minute is not acceptable at all. Scunthorpe are a good side but they’re a side we should be able to compete with on a level footing and we didn’t do that.

On post-match messages to players..
(I would only tell them) the truth. I don’t think there's any need to tear people apart personally. The truth is that a lot of players in there are not able to perform at the level at the moment. I even question one or two whether they were 100% focused on today's game and I think that’s the truth. That should hurt the players.

On positives...
There were certainly players out there who were tuned into the game for the whole 90 minutes and were trying to play to try and get back into the game even at the death. There were one or two that could come out of it with some sort of pride intact.

On going over to the travelling supporters at full time...
(I went over) to apologise because I’m the first person that needs to be held accountable for this performance for sure and I apologise to the fans that came to watch us and support us. At the bare minimum they expect to see total commitment from the players.
