REACTION: Williams Hails Players Following Charlton Rout

12 November 2016

Town Head Coach Luke Williams sat down with the media to give his reaction to his side’s superb 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic at The County Ground earlier this afternoon…

ON THE RESULT AND PERFORMANCE:

“Tim (Sherwood) has identified some positional play that has helped us to not give too many opportunities to our opponents and you saw that today.

“We gave very few opportunities away and some attacking moves were very specific for the players to work on.

“We saw that on display today.

“It was a fantastic performance. We looked very comfortable defensively, we looked like we could create, we looked like we could break and as the game went on we looked like we could manage the tempo of the game as well.

“They worked so hard and that contributed hugely to the goals.”

ON A CHANGE IN FORMATION:

“We’ve played 4-2-3-1 this season on a few occasions and it has worked well and then not so well, but after working with the players and looking back on a few of their previous performances, Tim (Sherwood) felt that was the strongest team he could put out on the pitch.

“It proved correct.”

ON GOING A GOAL UP JUST BEFORE HALF-TIME:

“It was very important and it is a great time to score a goal – everyone knows that.

minute and it really knocks you and it feels really difficult to recover from that.th“We’ve been on the receiving end of a couple of goals against us in the 44

“But, on the flipside of that, if it is your team that scores in the forty something minute then you know that sets you up for a very good second-half.”

ON SCORING FROM A SET-PIECE AGAIN:

“We have worked quite a bit recently to try and find an answer to why we’re not getting enough chances from set-pieces and we seem to have come up with a good combination of the correct player to make a good delivery and then the correct movement inside the box to create someone spare to try and attack the ball and score.”

ON THE FANS’ SUPERB BACKING:

“I would like to think the fans have given us a chance and they waited to see what happened with the change of regime.

“I felt that they were with the players more today and they feel that on the pitch.

“That was very helpful and they played their part today in us getting a result.”

ON KEEPING NICKY AJOSE QUIET:

“I was very pleased to see him not get any real clear opportunity at goal because you know that is only ending one way.”

ON INJURIES:

“Everybody is different and everybody heals at a different rate so we just need to monitor Nathan Thompson.

“I’m sure when we get to a point where we know Nathan is going to be back we can probably announce that and give everybody an idea of when they are going to see him back on the pitch.

“Jon Obika is making good progress and we’re getting to that stage where we can probably give everybody the heads up as to when he’ll actually be featuring again.”
