Brophy - Hard Work The Key Against Morecambe

Winger Reflects On Saturday's Victory

21 August 2017

James Brophy was thrilled with the battling qualities shown by Town in their 1-0 win away at Morecambe on Saturday.

The Reds produced a real gutsy display to extend their unbeaten start to the 2017/18 Sky Bet League Two season and move to the top of the table.

Town showed their tough underbelly throughout the 90 minutes against the Shrimpers and did enough to win the game thanks to Donal McDermott’s superb strike.

“The Gaffer emphasised the fact before the game that there is going to be a lot of hard work this season because a lot of teams at this level pride themselves on the effort and the commitment they give out on the pitch, and we saw that from Morecambe,” he told swindontownfc.co.uk exclusively.

“It was key for us to match what they gave out and then a bit of extra quality from us saw us through in the end.

“We knew it was going to be a battle and every game in League Two for the first 20/25 minutes is going to be scrappy and then after that you can see the quality come through.

“We dug deep for the first twenty minutes, stayed solid and then a quality shot from Donal (McDermott) saw us take the lead.

“He’s come back into training after his injury, he’s got back to near full-fitness and it just shows the extra bit of quality we’ve got.

“The Starting XI gave everything they had for the first hour, they blew their tank and left nothing in there so my job once I came on was to give everything I could, stretch the game and help us protect our lead.”

“It was key for us to match what they gave out and then a bit of extra quality from us saw us through in the end."

Town sit top of the Sky Bet League Two table, albeit early on, after collecting seven points from a possible nine and Brophy has been delighted by his side’s start.

“If you offered any of us before the season a return of seven points from the first nine then we would have snapped your hand off,” he added.

“It has been a good start and we’ve shown different qualities in each game. We dug deep on Saturday and kept the clean sheet, so we’re slowly getting there.

“It is a brand new squad so the return has been excellent.”

Brophy was also full of praise for the Town travelling support who have been brilliant when backing their team on the road so far this season.

“There is a lot of travelling for our fans this season and you could hear them throughout the game on Saturday,” he continued.

“They drive us forward on these away games and we need to repay their faith and give them a good performance after they’ve travelled such a long way and spent their money.”
