Luke Norris and Paul Mullin both opened their accounts for the season as Town enjoyed an opening day to remember at Brunton Park.
In what was an action-packed first-half, Norris opened the scoring after getting on the end of Chris Hussey’s pinpoint free-kick, although the frontman picked up an injury in the process.
Mullin, making his competitive Town bow, then doubled his side’s advantage just minutes into the second-half after reacting quickest to stab home on the rebound.
Luke Joyce pulled one back for United but the Reds produced a superb defensive display to get the new campaign off to a winning start.
