CENTRAL LEAGUE REPORT: Cheltenham Town 1-1 Town

24 January 2017

Town’s Development side came back from a goal down to secure a 1-1 draw away at Cheltenham Town in the Central League earlier today.

Dan Holman had fired the visitors in-front from the penalty spot before a trialist got the Reds back on level-terms after the break.

Town took a fairly strong squad to Cheltenham with the likes of Conor Thomas and Sean Murray both starting while a number of First-Year Scholars were named on the bench.

The first chance of the game went the way of the hosts as Dan Holman failed to hit the back of the net from a one-on-one situation, before Christian Frimpong saw his bullet header superbly kept out by Calum Kitscha at the other end.

Jordan Stewart then flashed a shot past the post following some brilliant build-up play with both sides still looking to make the breakthrough.

It was Cheltenham’s turn to attack next and they carved out two clear-cut chances in quick succession as Holman fired inches over from Harry Pell’s pinpoint cross, before James Dayton sent a diving header wide.

But that proved to be a sign of things to come as the home side took the lead late on in the first-half after Dolman won a penalty before stepping up to smash home the spot-kick.

Town could have been level on the stroke on half-time as Jordan Young’s deflected free-kick brought a fine stop from Kitscha.

Kitscha was in fine form and he produced another fantastic save to keep out Sean Murray’s strike shortly after the interval.

However, Town did haul themselves moments later courtesy of their trialist, who was in the right place at the right time to tuck home the rebound.

Will Henry then produced three superb stops in quick succession to keep the scores level, before Jake Evans saw his rasping volley tipped over the bar as an entertaining game ended all square.

TOWN STARTING XI:

Henry; Evans, Hathaway (Jordan Edwards), Frimpong, Spalding; Thomas, Smith (Ollie Rejek), Murray, Trialist; Young (Sol Pryce), Stewart.
