Flitcroft Over The Moon With Hussey Signing

Town Gaffer Ecstatic To Be Reunited With Former Bury Defender

8 July 2017

Town Boss Dave Flitcroft was thrilled to have secured a reunion with Sheffield United defender Chris Hussey.

The attacking left-back signed for the Reds on a season-long loan deal from The Reds on Friday and represents a significant capture for the football club.

Flitcroft worked with Hussey at Bury as The Shakers secured promotion to League One and the gaffer can’t wait to see the 28-year-old strut his stuff in a Town shirt.

“It is a fantastic signing,” he told swindontownfc.co.uk exclusively.

“He’s been promoted out of League Two, he’s been one of the best players in League One and he’s been around a promotion winning campaign again with Sheffield United.

“We’ve talked extensively to Chris about his last three or four years where he’s been very successful as a football player.

“I wanted to come down to Swindon and find a new set of players to work with and I’m excited to work with them, but Chris was one from day one that we didn’t think we would get because of the clubs that were interested in him and wanted him.

“We worked really hard on it and over a two-week period it was apparent after meeting a few times that Chris wanted to play for us and he saw Swindon as a fantastic opportunity to have a successful season and a winning season.

“I’m delighted that we’ve got Chris and already after only two days the training levels have gone up because of his quality and he’s a fit boy.

“He’s been doing well at Sheffield United in his pre-season running and testing and I’m buzzing to be working with him again.”

Hussey is known for his attacking prowess having once contributed 17 assists for Bury from left-back, and Flitcroft believes those qualities will be crucial to his team going forward.

“He naturally does it and he’s got an incredible capacity to get down the pitch,” he added.

“His left-foot delivery, whether it’s from set-pieces or in-swingers and out-swingers, is again something that is really important to the way we are going to play.

“When you’ve got someone like Luke Norris in the team who thrives on crosses and he’s got great aerial ability, then that will work perfectly.

“On paper we’ve signed a defender but there’s a lot more to his game than just defending.”
