Swindon Town discovered their 2017/18 schedule earlier today and we’ve rounded up some key dates to look forward to ahead of the new season.
Saturday 5th August:
The Reds will begin life in the Sky Bet League Two with a long trip to Carlisle United on opening day. Town will be hoping to get off a winning start and give new boss Dave Flitcroft the three points in what will be his first competitive game in charge of the club.
With a whole host of new players expected to be on show as well, it could be quite an exciting afternoon for Swindon fans.
Saturday 12th August:
Dave Flitcroft is certainly looking forward to this one with the visit of Exeter City to The County Ground marking his first home game in charge of Town.
The Grecians reached the League Two Play-Off Final last season and they will be hoping to go one better in 2017/18, which should make for an entertaining encounter at SN1.
Tuesday 12th September:
The first midweek game of the new season for Town and they ran out 3-0 winners upon their last visit to Notts County thanks to goals from John Swift, Harry Toffolo and Andy Williams.
Saturday 23rd September:
Forest Green Rovers are preparing for their first-ever season in the EFL and Town will be heading to the New Lawn for a competitive fixture for the very first time in late September. It will also see the Reds reunited with former manager Mark Cooper, who led the Reds to the League One Play-Off Final in 2014/15.
Tuesday 17th October:
Town will welcome another of League Two’s newcomers to The County Ground in the form of Lincoln City, who caught the imagination last season thanks to their FA Cup heroics.
Led by brothers Danny and Nicky Cowley, The Imps will be hoping to make a splash in their first season back in the EFL.
The two sides last met in March 2007 when goals from Christian Roberts, Barry Corr and Lee Peacock gave the Reds all three points in a huge top of the table clash.
Saturday 23rd December:
Swindon are on the road for the last game before Christmas away at Crewe and will be looking to enter the festive period on a high.
Oh what fun it is to see Town win away!
Tuesday 26th December:
Boxing Day football returns to The County Ground and Luton Town are the opposition. Both sides harbour promotion aspirations so it should be a cracker!
Saturday 30th December:
The games will come thick and fast for Town over the festive period and they will be hoping to end 2017 on a high by beating Notts County at home.
Monday 1st January:
A New Year and hopefully the start of good things to come. The Reds will certainly be looking to open 2018 with a bang away at Barnet.
Saturday 20th January:
We enjoyed our trip to the Ricoh Arena last season so let’s hope for more of the same in the New Year.
Saturday 3rd March:
A local game for Town who will welcome Yeovil Town to Wiltshire – the first meeting between the two sides since April 2015.
Saturday 10th March:
And the Reds will take part in another local derby (of sorts) just a week later with Cheltenham coming to Town.
Saturday 31st March:
Morecambe come to SN1 over the Easter period and don’t be surprised to see this fixture moved to a traditional Good Friday slot.
Saturday 28th April:
The final away game of the season and a trip to Colchester United. Could this be a huge fixture?
Time will tell…
Saturday 5th May:
The big one with Accrington Stanley coming to The County Ground on the final day of the season.
Let’s hope we’ve got an excuse to get the champagne out by this point.
