Flitcroft Thrilled To Have Robertson On Board

Swindon Gaffer Impressed By New Signing's Character

23 June 2017

Town Boss Dave Flitcroft feels new recruit Chris Robertson has the perfect character and attributes for what he is trying to build at The County Ground.

The towering centre-back became the first signing of the new era at The County Ground on Thursday after putting pen to paper on a deal at SN1.

With over 300 outings in professional football under his belt, Robertson will bring a wealth of experience to the Town backline and Flitcroft was thrilled with his first bit of transfer activity as Swindon manager.

“When we interviewed Chris and when we looked at his career, he’s a solid character and he wants to move his family down here,” he told swindontownfc.co.uk exclusively.

“All the other players we are speaking to are all of a similar ilk and they want to do that, they want to commit to Swindon and they want to commit to our vision that we’ve set out on and off the field, which is very important to me.

“Chris has got great experience that we certainly need and the younger players around him will certainly benefit from that.

“Chris has joined us and I’m delighted he’s come in. He has got the profile of a centre-half that I was looking for.

“There’s some really gifted players here but, now I’ve been here for a couple of weeks, what I want to get rid of and what I know I’ve got to get rid of is that soft underbelly.

“Any team who is successful will have strong leaders and we’ve been scouring the country for that and Chris certainly resembles someone who has got strong values.”

“I’ve got to make these players stronger and improve that character, improve that mentality and improve that mind-set.

“We can do that on the training ground but you need leaders to do that and that is what the first part of the rebuilding process will be about.

“Any team who is successful will have strong leaders and we’ve been scouring the country for that and Chris certainly resembles someone who has got strong values.”

Robertson flew through his medical with flying colours and Flitcroft went on to praise the professionalism of his new recruit.

“He must have been doing a lot of press ups because he’s gone for a tight top and got the guns out today!” Flitcroft joked.

“He’s worked out, he’s looked after himself in the summer and he’s a top professional.

“You want someone like that at the heart of your defence and you want someone who wants to be out there, they want to be defending and they see defending as part of their life – it’s been in their DNA and their makeup since they were very young.

“He’s certainly got the size and structure and he wants to defend, he wants to keep the ball out of the net and that’s very important to him.

“When we spoke to Chris about the hard work and the endeavour, that’s what he thrives on and enjoys.”
