REACTION: Luke Williams Assesses Chesterfield Defeat

4 March 2017

Town Head Coach Luke Williams spoke to members of the local media in the wake of his side’s 1-0 defeat to Chesterfield at The County Ground earlier this afternoon...

“There is nothing too much to say. They had one clear chance and they scored,” he said.

“We did everything to try and win the game, we kept going in-front of the keeper and they put everyone back, which is sensible because they have watched the last three games where we created a lot of chances.

minute and there’s not too much to say.nd“They had one chance in the 92

“We didn’t quit and we didn’t for one moment stop trying to win the game.

“If the ball doesn’t go into the back of net then we can’t score and we can’t win the game.

“The team kept on creating, creating and creating but we were in-front of the goalkeeper and just couldn’t find the finishing touch.

“Jordan Stewart got a chance late on, it was a great time to score and it was inside the box, he needed to squeeze it past the goalkeeper at the near post or put it across to the far post, but it just didn’t happen for us.

“Chesterfield set up brilliantly well, their manager is excellent and I knew it was going to be very difficult.

“You expect it to be difficult when everybody is in-front of the goal, but the best you can do is create something and we created plenty of half-chances.

“It looked like everyone was marking in the box for the goal but we got outmuscled because their players were bigger.

“I don’t think we switched off.

“If you’re in the dressing room now then you know you did enough to score and you are frustrated because you didn’t win the game.

“We need to take something from the performance and we played the game to win and we created chances against a team that was very organised.

“We need to take some confidence from the performance.

“Ten more seconds it is 0-0 and we’re four unbeaten and then it would have been very different – we are talking about ten seconds of football and one action.”
