REACTION: Flitcroft Elated After Port Vale Win

Gaffer Gives His Verdict On 3-0 Success

28 October 2017

Swindon Town Boss Dave Flitcroft hailed his side's emphatic 3-0 victory at Port Vale this afternoon as one of their best of the s

Speaking to members of the local media in the wake of the game, the Gaffer gave his thoughts on a number of topics relating to the win.

Here are the key points from what he had to say...

ON THE RESULT AND PERFORMANCE:

"It is (one of the most satisfying wins of the season) because it backs up a really good weeks' work.

"I said that I've been disappointed recently because we've had a fantastic performance and then we've not backed that up.

"What today has backed up is the continuing improvement of the group, we're getting better and we've kept another clean sheet.

"We really dismantled a very, very good Port Vale team in the second-half. They beat Exeter and in a week where we've come up against two of the most dangerous strikers in Adebayo Akinfenwa and Tom Pope, we've given them very little to feed on and we've given up very few shots on goal.

"I was delighted with the structure of the team and I said after the Forest Green Rovers game that I felt the lads who hadn't played as much really committed to that game, they really committed to the game-plan and they were fantastic in their application.

"They've come on the pitch today, Mulls (Paul Mullin) and Kellan (Gordon) and just slotted in and that's what a good team does.

"Donal (McDermott) and Johnny (Goddard) gave everything they had and for them to come on, Timi Elsnik as well, and feel so part of something is what we're trying to build at the football club.

"It is a brilliant win and I'm delighted for the players and the supporters again."

ON MATTY TAYLOR'S FREE-KICK:

"You've got to be able to mix it up and roll with momentum and you've got to deal with those moments and I felt we did that in the first-half.

"As the game went on they started to come out at us and we opened them up and the goal was absolutely brilliant.

"I was disappointed with Tails that he didn't take the one in the first-half and I told him that at half-time.

"If I've got that left foot then I'm moving Johnny G off the ball and I'm taking it.

"I told him that at half-time and he stepped up and it was a wonderful strike. I bet it looked beautiful going in from behind the goal.

"Once Port Vale started chasing and looking for an equaliser, we've got pace, power and creativity on the pitch and Amine Linganzi shackled Tom Pope today."

ON THE THIRD GOAL:

"To be part of a team and to play for a team you have to appreciate a team and Harry (Smith) was really unselfish with his action there.

"It is 90% that he can score but 100% that Kellan (Gordon) can score and that 3-0 scoreline really helps us with an advantage and it helps with the goal difference.

"I'm delighted that Harry has made that choice and it was Kellan's first league goal.

"He's been out of the team four, five games, he's come back in and scored a goal. I'm delighted for the players."

ON CONFIDENCE:

"It is a team that is gaining confidence. We played with a confidence and not an arrogance and that is really important.

"We tried to win a game of football by working hard. Our players played with a real honesty and they did the ugly stuff when they had to."
