TAYLOR: THAT’S THE BEST I’VE SEEN VIGS PLAY

Experienced pro, Matt Taylor heaped praise on his goalkeeper after nine-man Town drew to Crawley.

Taylor, as part of a back four, kept out Crawley Town for the best part of 45 minutes following James Dunne’s and Toumani Diagouraga’s red cards.

Taylor, as part of a back four, kept out Crawley Town for the best part of 45 minutes following James Dunne’s and Toumani Diagouraga’s red cards, before Ollie Palmer's 99th-minute penalty rescued a point for the hosts.

Despite the nature of the result, Taylor highlighted Lawrence Vigouroux’s performance as one of note.

“I must say that I thought that was best game I’ve ever seen Lawrence Vigouroux have – I said that to him in there (the dressing room). The confidence he gave us tonight as a back four to release the pressure off of us, to come and get or punch the ball.

“I said to him: ‘You’ve set your standard now.’ I’m expecting that every week and so are the boys. There’s a lot of positives to take; obviously, it’s a difficult result to digest. The good thing is we’ve got a game on this Saturday that we need to prepare for, because that will be a tough game against Forest Green.

“There are things we need to focus on because we’ve got on because we’ve got some really disappointed players in that dressing room and it’s going to be important now that we pick them up.”

The left-back almost sealed victory deep into injury time with a howitzer of a free-kick that rattled the underside of the crossbar, before bouncing the wrong side of the goal-line.

“I thought it was in as soon as I hit it. It would have been a nice way to finish the game off but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be and we’ve conceded from an error on our behalf as opposed to the opposition cutting us open.”

On his team’s defence performance, Taylor thought, up until the penalty, that they’d done enough to win the game.

“I actually felt really comfortable defending – I thought we forced them into wide areas very well. At times, their quality of ball into the box wasn’t great. We’re really disappointed we haven’t come away with three points which I suppose tells you about the belief we have in each other in the changing room.

“We need to become resolute – we’re conceding too many goals from individual errors but that is something we can control so, therefore, we need to eradicate those errors because if we don’t we won’t achieve what we want this season. I could sit here and sugar-coat it but we can’t keep conceding three goals every game and going up the other and trying to score more than the opposition.

“I know it sounds simple but one of the best results I’ve had in my career is 1-0 away from home. I think we played really well in the first half to be honest with you – we dominated possession, took our chances.

“We did show fantastic character against 11 for 45 minutes – we defended extremely well so we’ve got to take that into the next game.”
