Swindon succumbed to a 0-2 home defeat to Cambridge United with both goals coming in the first 12 minutes.

In a poor performance Reggie Lambe opened the scoring with a simple finish before Jevani Brown doubled the lead in a similar circumstances a minute later.

Town huffed and puffed but couldn’t break their opponents down over the 90 minutes despite spending a lot of the game in their opponents’ final third.

First Half

The hosts were warned early on – Lambe was in-behind with a 90 seconds but fluffed his lines with Lawrence Vigouroux able to save one-on-one.

On nine minutes, Town had a chance of their own – Michael Doughty picked up a yard of space, passed to Elijah Adebayo who cut back to Steven Alzate. George Taft chucked his body in front of the shot which was flying towards goal.

However, a minute later and they were behind – Lambe found himself through and calmly finished. And before the home side could regroup Jevani Brown had doubled the lead, in all too similar circumstances.

Town had a mountain to climb – and nearly started that process on 21 minutes. Dion Conroy rose highest in a crowded penalty area but headed straight at David Forde, in the Cambridge goal.

Doughty picked up a knock that forced him off but James Dunne was sprightly as he replaced his fellow midfielder – he had two bites at the cherry in quick succession. His first attempt was blocked by a cluster of bodies before Forde reacted well to the second.

Conroy tried his luck from distance – but his shot didn’t dip enough to worry Forde.

Dunne had been Town’s best player since coming and had another pop but Forde was down well, and tipped away.

Second Half

Town’s min man in the second half was Keshi Anderson – he went on a bending run through the U’s midfield, found Taylor whose cross was nicked off the head of Elijah Adebayo.

Bu without Town throwing men forward Cambridge was always a threat on the break – Brown almost made it three but Vigrouroux stopped.

Marc Richards tried to get the Town back into it but his shot on the spin whistled past the post on the hour mark.

And Richards was thwarted again a minute later – Forde had to be on alert to tip his downward header away.

Matt Taylor had Town’s last effort – but his 20-yard strike went past the past the post with Forde scrambling across his goal.
