BROWN: WE HAVE A DUTY TO OUR FANS

7 September 2018

The Gaffer spoke to the media ahead of the long trip to Lancashire.

Phil Brown says his side have a ‘duty’ to the travelling fans as they travel to Morecambe hoping to bring home maximum points for the first time this season.

“The travelling fans are going to go 250-mile up the road – they want to see a performance. We have a duty to our fans, and to ourselves that we end up coming away from Morecambe with three points.

“Since Lincoln, we’ve won one, drawn three on the road but all three of those draws have been winnable at one stage but we have shown lots of character, durability – there’s stuff in the changing room that you can’t measure; strength of character, being able to dig yourself out of situations you shouldn’t be in.

“There’s a lot that you can measure and in those factors we’re improving week by week.”

Morecambe have only won once so far this season but the Town boss says that makes them all the more dangerous.

“It’s a tough challenge – a very, very wounded animal and a big wounded animal in Jim Bentley. I know what he’s like – my kind of character if I ever wanted a centre-half he’d be my type of centre-half – he’s been at that football club but I think he should have had a chance higher.

“He’s a very well-respected member of the management fraternity. He’s hurting at the moment, by any stretch of the imagination but his teams are never far from hard-working, taskmaster style of play.

“He demands everything from every position and you have to put you attitude out there because of that, because if you don’t, they (Morecambe) will run all over you.

“My emphasis to our lads is to not look at league tables and underestimate this group – they can and will defend for their lives and they’ve got the ability to score goals.

“We’ve got a gameplan – and hopefully our quality will eventually come through.

“The first goal we have to start thinking about as the winning goal – instead of it just mattering. The first goal has to be a fear factor for and against – if it’s for then we have to have the mentality to get over the line, if it’s against we have to have the mentality to come from behind.”
