PREVIEW: OLDHAM ATHLETIC

26 September 2018

Town head into Saturday’s clash with Oldham looking for back-to-back league wins for the first time this season.

Phil Brown’s boys will go into the game on a high having seen off Yeovil in style last weekend, romping to a 3-0 win with goals from Steven Alzate, Matt Taylor and Elijah Adebayo. Olufela Olomola missed a penalty for the Glovers on a wet and windy day in Somerset.

Town have won two, drawn one and lost one at home but haven’t won at SN1 since August 19th against Tranmere (a Checkatrade Trophy victory against Newport County aside) so will be keen to perform in front of their home support after impressive away displays.

Steven Alzate now sits joint second in the assist charts behind Oldham’s Dan Gardner, with Michael Doughty now two goals off top scorer in the league, James Norwood, and a single strike behind Oldham’s Sam Surridge.

The Oppo

Oldham sit level on points with Swindon but have been performing well away from home – in fact, all but one of their four wins so far this season have come on the road.

One of Oldham’s star players so far has been loanee Sam Surridge who has scored six goals so far this season, four of which have come in their last two games.

At the top of the assist charts is Dan Gardner who has set up four goals so far this season – he has also contributed with two goals in League Two.

Head-to-head

This is the first ever meeting between Oldham and Swindon in the fourth tier and Town will be hoping that it will mean a change in fortunes against the Latics, as the Robins have taken just three points away from their last six home league matches against Saturday’s.

Their general record against the Greater Manchester outfit is not the best – Town have picked up one win in their last six meetings with Oldham.

Our last win over Oldham came in September 2016, when Jon Obika and Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill sealed a 2-0 win at Boundary Park.

The Gaffer

Frankie Bunn joined Oldham Athletic in June and has enjoyed a positive start to life back at Boundary Park.

The former Latics’ striker made 88 appearances and scored 35 goals for the club between 1987 and 1990 before his career was cut short through injury.

Following his playing career, Bunn held a number of coaching roles at clubs such as Wigan Athletic, Coventry City, Manchester City, Rochdale and most recently Huddersfield Town.

At Coventry City he was appointed caretaker manager before returning to his first-team coach role at the club under Chris Coleman.

Throughout his time in coaching he has worked to develop young players and bring through the next generation of talent at clubs such as Manchester City where he held the role of reserve manager and Huddersfield Town where he was a professional development coach working closely with their academy and under 18s.
