WELLENS: SUCCESS WITHOUT THE FANS IS IMPOSSIBLE

13 February 2019

Richie Wellens claim success was ‘impossible’ if you don’t have the supporters on side and was delighted with the County Ground atmosphere during his side’s 2-0 win over Forest Green.

Home wins have been hard to come by despite the Robins’ impressive away form but Wellens’ team were comprehensive in their victory over promotion-chasing Rovers.

Kaiyne Woolery bagged the opener with a sizzling strike before Theo Robinson showed calm and class to round off the scoring before half-time.

The latter received a standing ovation on his home debut for his industrious first outing at the County Ground.

Wellens made a point of outlining the fact that sort of reception and relationship is what he wants for all his players

“It was a great finish – Theo’s much more than that though. His work rate, attitude towards the game – I played with Theo six or seven years ago and he’s improved tactically and in his awareness.

“He’ll be a really good player for us.

“The supporters have got a relationship with a player (already) and that’s what we want – player comes off and they sing his name: he feels ten-foot tall. If we can get that with all the players, we don’t know what we can achieve but what I do know is that confidence is ten times more important at this level than at the top.

“When you’ve got the supporters singing your name when you’re coming off then you gain in confidence.”

Wellens said the difference fans make at his level is ‘ten times’ more important than at the top level.

“That’s what building a team is about – it’s about putting fundamentals in place but you have to involve the supporters. I’ve been involved as a player in numerous promotion pushes – play-offs, winning promotions and if you don’t have the supporters on side giving you that feel-good factor it’s impossible to be successful.

“I’ve played away at grounds where, with five, six games to go, they’re going for promotion and I’ve felt it and said: “these are going to go up” because this place is rocking. You can feel it and that’s what we’re trying to generate here.”
