WELLENS: I WANT TO SEE ATTRACTIVE FOOTBALL

31 July 2019

Richie Wellens has stated that his Swindon Town side must get off to a strong start following a promising pre-season.

Following a 6-0 victory over Melksham Town on Tuesday evening, the Town boss was keen to praise his side’s efforts ahead of the new campaign.

“It’s been enjoyable, it’s been good seeing the players come back at a decent level of fitness, but then really improve upon that fitness.

“I don’t believe that everyone’s at 100% fitness until you play a couple of league games, so I’m looking forward in the next couple of weeks to getting everyone fully fit.”

When speaking on his first full pre-season in charge, Wellens stated: “It’s been long, it’s felt long simply because the amount of agents, amount of phone calls you’ve had to make and are still making.”

“We might have to wait for the middle of August to get the right striker. We won’t have another one for Saturday. We need to make sure that whoever we do get in, is the right one.

“We’ve made a couple of good signings but obviously we’re looking for that number nine player, that stays between the posts but we’re still looking.”

When asked on his expectation for the season, Wellens said: “We need to start as quickly as possible.

“We want to continue what we started last season with a better mindset and a better squad so I think we need to be up and around the top 10 after the first 10 or 15 games and kick on from there.

“I want to see attractive football and to be an exciting team to watch, a team that can slow the ball down if we need to but just be an attractive team to watch.”
