UNIQUE DANNY WILLIAMS SCRAPBOOK AVAILABLE TO BUY

24 May 2019

Supporters have the chance to purchase a unique scrapbook of Danny Williams’ memories of the run to the 1969 League Cup Final and the win at Wembley against Arsenal.

Originally put together by his wife, Joyce, the scrapbook gives a special insight into the club’s most famous achievement including telegrams, newspaper cuttings and photos of the late-Swindon boss’ experience of that time.

In the foreword to the book, you can find the following extract:

Swindon Town’s League Cup victory in 1969 is one of the most famous underdog stories in British football history.

Their route to the final took them to Valley Parade, Highfield Road, The Baseball Ground, and Turf Moor but the tougher it got the more Danny Williams’ boys stepped up.

Rogers, Trollope, Smart and company went to first division sides and flourished, as well as the top of the second division but Arsenal at Wembley was the final challenge.

On the day, everyone saw the minnows defeat the giants – Roger Smart scoring the scruffiest but the most joyous goal in Town history, Downsborough’s mistake.

But Don was the hero in extra time – Bob Wilson pushed onto the post but Rogers was there; he moved the ball from right to left foot and squeezed it into the goal.

He wasn’t done there though – despite their third division status, the West Country side were fitter than their North London counterparts and Williams’ men were in the ascendancy for most of the second period of extra-time. In the final minute, the Don raced clear, moving swiftly onto a pass from Smart, rounded Wilson with his usual grace and slotted in.

That was on the pitch; off the pitch there are famous stories – the horse show, fish and chips after the game and Arsenal’s bate of flu - but in an age where TV cameras were few and far between and the ‘behind-the-scenes’ remained unseen, there is much untold and unknown for those not fortunate enough to be part of that famous squad.

Danny Williams’ wife, Joyce put together this scrapbook that gives a completely unique insight into his and the club’s greatest achievement – it includes newspaper cuttings, photographs, and telegrams sent to Danny from fans.

The Williams family have generously allowed this book to be shared with fans of the Town, giving the club a unique perspective one its most famous day.
