WELLENS ON TRANSFERS

15 May 2019

The work doesn’t stop as soon as the season finishes for everyone at the football club, including manager, Richie Wellens who is already busy trying to land transfer targets.

After releasing a sizeable portion of players at the end of their contracts, Wellens is on the hunt for players who want to share in his and the club’s search for promotion.

STFC iFollow sat down with the Swindon boss to discuss what he is looking for in the transfer market.

“First and foremost, I want good players. If they’re really, really good players then I’ll take little side issues but if I can get players with good character, good spirit and good worth ethic.

“We had some talented players last season but do I think the work ethic was ingrained in them every single day? No, I don’t think it was.

“The players coming in now, I will try and get the work ethic even on days that aren’t going our way.

“This is a league where I can think you can still get points when it’s not your day – if you haven’t played well or passed the ball properly.

“I think it’s a league where you can still sneak results so I’m on the phone every single day, watching players constantly so I’d like to get three or four done as soon as possible.

“It’s that time when players, managers, agents are on holiday so it’s difficult.”

Wellens’ preferred methodology is to watch players first rather than have players put to him before going to assess their ability.

“Ideally I’d like to make signings that I’ve seen before on a consistent basis – there’s two or three that I’m trying to get over the line now that have played against us that have given me that feel that they’re causing us problems.

“I’ve watched more of their games but I’d like to make signings that I’m aware of rather than people plucking a name out and me watching them in reaction.”
