MATT SMITH SIGNS ONE-YEAR LOAN WITH TOWN

17 August 2020

Swindon Town are delighted to announce the signing of Midfielder, Matt Smith on a season-long loan from Arsenal. The deal is subject to EFL and FA approval.

Smith spent his youth career with Arsenal playing 12 times for their U23’s side in the Premier League 2 competition. During that time, he managed a goal and three assists.

Although he has not made a senior appearance for the Gunners, he did pick up an FA Cup final winners medal following their 2-1 win over Chelsea.

The 19-year-old caught the eye of Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta and was been named on the first-team bench 6 times last season, including that win at Wembley.

Matt is one of three Arsenal players to have been loaned out to League One clubs, following Zech Medley and Trae Coyle’s move to Gillingham.

Upon signing his contract, Smith had this to say:

"I'm very excited. I feel like it will be a good experience for me and I'm looking forward to starting the season."

"I feel like I'm going to learn a lot off the manager. He's pretty similar to Mikel Arteta, they're both very encouraging. The gaffer has made me feel welcome and I feel the qualites I have can match the way he wants to play."

We would like to welcome Matt to the club and are excited to see him pull on a Town shirt over the next year.
