Earlier on this year, we put out a supporter survey asking what people thought a proper Swindon Town team looked like, what proper football looked like.
The overwhelming amount of responses included words like commitment and passion, phrases such as 100% effort, or willingness to fight for the shirt.
Some responses to our question on proper football alluded to the belief that football at the County Gound felt like real football.
Football has changed so much in recent years. Some things have been good and have added to our game. Some have the potential to enhance it, once done right. Some haven’t improved it at all.
At Swindon Town, this season, and into next, we want to take a stand and say this is what real football is.
Real football is about emotion and passion, grit and determination - it’s about big tackles, goals that hit the underside of the crossbar on their way in, hard work, commitment, obscene pieces of skill - but most of all, it’s about you, your friends and your family.
Real football is not waiting five minutes to be able to celebrate your team scoring a goal. It’s not about prawn sandwiches - or walking out of Club Wembley halfway through the FA Cup Final’s second half.
We want to make sure that football keeps all the things that made you, your parents and their parents fall in love with the game – and, by extension, Swindon Town.
We don’t want to see the game sanitised. We want to keep the passion alive.
So, throughout this campaign, we’re taking it back to the basics: real people, with real emotion, watching real football. Something that, here at Swindon, we think we’ve got. That’s it.
