MATCH REPORT: Swindon Town 1-1 Harrogate Town

Reds battle back to earn a point

27 November 2021

Swindon Town secured a hard-fought point after battling back in a 1-1 draw with Harrogate Town in the EFL Sky Bet League Two at The County Ground earlier today.

Harrogate nudged themselves ahead in the first-half thanks to Jack Diamond's strike, and that proved the difference in a timid first-half.

Swindon were much, much improved after the break and they got their just rewards eventually when Jack Payne scored from the penalty spot late on to rescue a well-deserved point.

Town Head Coach Ben Garner made just the one change as Ben Gladwin replaced Harry McKirdy in the Starting XI, while Romoney Crichlow returned from injury to take his place on the bench.

It was also a special day for Captain Dion Conroy, who was making his 100th appearance in all competitions for the club.

Harrogate had the better of the early chances as Rob Hunt was forced into a heroic goal line clearance, before Jojo Wollacott produced a superb save to claw away a long-range effort from Lloyd Kerry.

Luke Armstrong then nodded wide for the visitors, but Harrogate did take the lead with more than 20 minutes played. Mark Oxley sent a long ball downfield which Jack Diamond was able to latch on to, and he did the rest by beating Wollacott with a low finish.

HALF-TIME: SWINDON TOWN 0-1 HARROGATE TOWN

Town looked to put on a much better display in the second-half and they got off to a promising start as Jonny Williams weaved his way in and out of a crowd of bodies, but his shot was blocked.

In order to inject a much-needed spark into their attack, the Reds made a change as Harry McKirdy replaced Ben Gladwin.

Town were beginning to pile on the pressure in the search for an equaliser, dominating both possession and the flow of the game.

A ball inside the area just evaded Tyreece Simpson, before Wollacott displayed safe hands to hold onto an effort from Kelly, and then Kaine Kesler-Hayden could only drag a shot wide at the other end.

With time running out, Town made another switch as the speedy Jayden Mitchell-Lawson replaced Rob Hunt, and the attacker made an immediate impact.

He got the ball and was brought down inside the area, leading to Jack Payne to step up and smash home his 8th goal of the season to restore parity.

Simpson then shot on the turn with his effort rippling the side netting, before Louis Reed's drive from distance whistled inches past the post.

Romoney Crichlow, making his return from injury, then replaced Kaine Kesler-Hayden in the dying minutes, and Payne nearly won it for the Reds in the final seconds but his effort was blocked by Harrogate's George Thomson and that proved to be the final action of the game with both sides having to settle for a point.
