Gilbert reflects on Port Vale Loss

Attacker gives his thoughts on Saturday's game

13 September 2021

Alex Gilbert was honest in his assessment of Swindon Town's 2-1 loss to Port Vale at The County Ground on Saturday.

The Reds were slow out of the gates on Saturday and they ultimately paid the price as Ben Garrity's double proved the difference, despite the fact that Tyreece Simpson restored parity shortly after the break.

In the wake of the game, Gilbert sat down with the local media to reflect on the loss as well as his own impressive start to life at SN1.

"It wasn't a great performance from us and we weren't particularly proud of how we played," Gilbert said.

"We knew how they would be physical, very direct and play the channels and we knew that's what they were going to be like.

"We didn't live up to it today.

"You get days like this as players where it doesn't go right for you. I mean, personally, I had a few chances, the team had a few chances and we all just felt a bit frustrated that it wasn't going for us.

"It was one of those days.

"We weren't getting on second balls, they were being very direct, going in the channels and we weren't following the runs.

"We got that first goal to get back level and we were pushing on for the second goal. I had a chance, Tyreece (Simpson) hit the post and there were opportunities.

"We as a team felt like it was coming but it just wasn't to be.

"I've loved every minute of it so far, apart from not getting the result (on Saturday). All the lads have welcomed me, the Gaffer has welcomed me and I'm really pleased to be here.

"Hopefully this season will go very well."
