MATCH REACTION: Scott Lindsey “I’m proud of my team tonight”

Town First-Team boss hails outstanding performance from his inexperienced side despite defeat to Palace…

30 August 2022

Swindon Town boss Scott Lindsey took time to paise his young side and hailed their performance as outstanding, as the conceded two second half goals to lose their Papa John’s Trophy opener 2-0 to Crystal Palace despite dominating for the majority of the tie.

Addressing the media post-match, Lindsey admitted he was proud of his sides confident display.

“I thought we were excellent tonight with some outstanding performances all round.

“We held on to the ball well, I lost count of how many passes we racked up and dominated from start to finish, so I’m pleased.

“Of course it’s disappointing to lose the game as I thought we deserved to win, even with ten men towards the end. We hit the post three times and created lots of chances, so I’m happy.

“We’ve handed four young players their first-team debuts this evening and I thought they all did really well.

“However we must win games when we play as well as that, and that’s something we need to learn, but the young lads who came in did fantastic.”

Lindsey on Palace’s first goal…

“It happens in football. It was a good finish from their forward after a long spell of dominating the game, so it was disappointing to see them take the lead, but the players will learn from that.

“Games like this are great experience for them and like I’ve said, I thought they were all great this evening and put a good shift in.

“I thought Tyrese (Shade), Ronan (Darcy) and Ricky (Aguiar) played well too and created a lot for us, so there’s a lot of positives for us to take.”

Lindsey on giving Sonny Hart his debut…

“I wasn’t aware Sonny has become our youngest ever player to feature in the first-team and I’m really pleased with that.

“He’s a good kid and only just turned sixteen, he works really hard, is confident and good on the ball. I think he’ll have a big future in the game.

“He’s actually been training with the first-team since he was fifteen, and he hasn’t looked out of place which says a lot about his ability and personality.

“He will keep learning and progressing and it will be interesting to see how he gets on moving forward.”

“I also thought Abu Kanu did well. It was a tough evening for him up front but he put a shift in and worked extremely hard. It’s great experience for him.

The absence of Tomi Adeloye and Oscar Massey…

“Unfortunately Tomi has a minor thigh problem at present which meant he couldn’t feature today.

“He’s had a scan on it today and we are now just awaiting the results. It’s nothing major but we will continue to assess him.

“Oscar is having some time off due to a family issue and will be back in full training soon.”

Scott’s approach to the forthcoming Papa John’s games…

“I want to keep giving youngsters minutes in this competition as it’s huge for their development.

“We’ve seen a lot of positives tonight and it gives them the chance to get some valuable first team experience, but it’s also good to give some of the pros who haven’t had too many minutes some game time too.

“The next Papa John’s game isn’t for a month so we will assess the squad then and see what approach we take.”
