Garner - It will be a tough test

Gaffer on Exeter clash

4 February 2022

Swindon Town Head Coach Ben Garner knows his side will be in for a tough afternoon against Exeter City on Saturday at The County Ground.

The Reds entertain the Grecians at SN1 in the EFL Sky Bet League Two tomorrow - 3pm kick-off - with just one place and a couple of points the difference between the two teams in the table.

Therefore, Saturday's game is of huge importance and, with Exeter unbeaten in their last four outings, Garner is aware that his team will have to be at their best in order to come out on top.

"I expect a tough test and I think it will be a good game," Garner said.

"They've got a good squad, they have been a really well run club for a number of years now, Matt Taylor has done a good job since taking over and they are capable of passing the ball well.

"I saw them not long ago against Forest Green live, they were very good on the night and deserved to win, and I've watched a lot of them this week.

"They can certainly punish on the counter-attack, they've got players who can do that very, very quickly and with quality, so we need to be aware of that, we need to have good security behind the ball when we attack, and we need to press well when they've got the ball because they can pass well and they can open teams up.

"It would be lovely (to extend the gap in the table over Exeter). We want the win.

"We've felt hard done by with the last two games but we can't let that detract from what we've been doing, we need to build on it and hopefully have the same level of performance but get the three points we desperately want.

"I expect a great atmosphere, it should be a good game and hopefully we come out on top."

And Garner went on to outline just how exactly Deadline Day arrival, Joe Tomlinson, who signed on loan from Peterborough United on Monday, has fared in his first week with the club.

"He's settled in really well," Garner added.

"I really like his character, he's very, very positive, he's a confident lad, he's got great ability and he's fitted in really well.

"He has certainly hit the ground running this week so very pleased to have him here and hopefully he can do very well."
