Scott Lindsey: “Marine will be a tough test”

Town boss looking to feature more first-teamers in second pre-season game…

8 July 2022

Swindon Town First-Team Head Coach, Scott Lindsey, says tomorrow’s friendly fixture with neighbours Swindon Supermarine will provide his players with the solid test they need as their pre-season schedule gathers pace.

Having recorded a 3-2 win over Melksham in their first warm-up game of the new campaign with a team consisting primarily of trialists, the recently-appointed boss will be taking a stronger side to the Webbswood Stadium to give some more familiar faces some important game time.

Speaking to Town’s Media Team ahead of tomorrow’s clash, Lindsey admits his players have made huge strides in training this week and the game will be key in experimenting further and improving their fitness.

“The lads have done really well over the past five days with increased intensity in our sessions and tomorrow’s game provides us with a really good opportunity to roll out some of the tactical work we’ve focused on and of course, get minutes in the legs,” he said.

“It’s a great setup at Marine and a lovely pitch, and gives us the chance to feature some more first teamers to enable us to assess where we are at physically.

“Marine certainly won’t be a straight forward game. They have some quality players who have experience at a decent standard and they’ll work really hard, so we will have to compete.”

Lindsey also admits he’ll have one eye on their next friendly against National League side Woking on Tuesday, and the importance of insuring players are rested where necessary and not overworked.

“The Woking game comes just a few days after Marine, so it’s vital we manage each players workload and assess their condition individually on the pitch.

“We have a detailed plan in place over the coming week with the matches factored in, which ensures we can continue improving the fitness of the squad and avoid overloading them.”

Kick off at the Webbswood Stadium tomorrow, Saturday 9 July, is 3pm.
