REACTION: Garner - We found a way to win

Gaffer on Bradford win

5 March 2022

Swindon Town Head Coach Ben Garner was delighted with how his team found a way to win after beating Bradford City 2-1 at Valley Parade this afternoon.

Gareth Evans opened the scoring for the hosts before Harry McKirdy quickly restored parity, and the Reds weathered a storm to snatch all three points thanks to Jack Payne's last-gasp penalty.

And, in the wake of the game, Garner went and spoke to the local media to give his thoughts on the win, the performance and more...

GARNER ON WIN & PERFORMANCE...

"We weren't as good today with the ball as we normally are, but we showed grit, we showed character and we found a way to win the game.

"You need to do that and that was the first of five games in a short period of time and you've got to be able to grind points sometimes and show a desire to win.

"I'm really, really pleased with that.

"We lost Joe Tomlinson in the warm-up, that disrupts what we plan to do, AK (Akin Odimayo) comes into the team and he has to come off and we have to change shape, so absolutely over the moon with that three points.

"We had to change shape, we conceded a little bit of ground with their centre-halves, but I thought we could win it in the mid-third and break off of that.

"We had two or three opportunities to do that, I thought we could have done a little bit better in those scenarios, but good pressure at the end, crosses coming in, corners, we get the penalty and Payney (Jack Payne) shows his composure to put it away.

"I thought we started slow, we didn't adapt to the tempo of the game well enough and they started really well, played a diamond, had good movement, good runners, we didn't track runners well enough and we didn't compete quick enough in that first 15 minutes.

"We got to grips with it, I thought we finished the first-half the stronger of the two teams, got a great goal and I thought we started the second-half better.

"They got some momentum and then we finished the strongest.

"It is really pleasing to see that grit and that desire to win and to come out with three points."

GARNER ON HARRY MCKIRDY'S GOAL...

"Brilliant. It was a fantastic timing of the run and a brilliant finish.

"Jonny Williams did great with the ball across and it was a brilliant goal.

"The only disappointment with Harry was the yellow card."

GARNER ON SUBS...

"i thought Frenchy (Mathieu Baudry) came on and was brilliant.

"He won everything, he was composed on the ball, leadership, talked and the impact of our subs today was fantastic."

GARNER ON JACK PAYNE...

"It was brilliant to have him back and I thought he gave us real quality when he came on.

"He gives us that energy and drive, he's got that composure and that poise on the ball and he makes us tick.

"We've missed him badly and it was wonderful to have him back.

"In that situation (for the penalty), there's no better man."

GARNER ON JOE TOMLINSON...

"He just felt his groin in the warm-up.

"He struck a ball, felt his groin straightaway, he was upset and obviously couldn't start the game.

"We'll get that scanned as quick as we can and fingers crossed it is not too bad.

"It changed the balance and that is no slight on AK because he came in and did very well considering it was dropped on him five minutes before kick-off, but you then get Rob Hunt going across on the other side on his opposite foot and it was a change in the dynamic to the team.

"We adapted to it."
