Garner - Embrace the challenge

Gaffer on First-Leg test

14 May 2022

Swindon Town Head Coach Ben Garner wants his team to embrace the challenge that's in-front of them on Sunday.

The Reds start their postseason campaign on Sunday when they take on Port Vale in the First-Leg of the EFL Sky Bet League Two Playoff Semi-Final at The County Ground (12pm KO).

It is a huge game for Town as they look to take a positive result to Vale Park on Thursday, and Garner knows his players will be up for the challenge.

"We've had a pretty normal week for us. It has been a really good week, players have been in good form and they've looked sharp, they've looked hungry and from my perspective it has been a perfect week so far going into tomorrow," Garner said.

"We want to try and win both games. We'll focus on tomorrow, we want to attack, we want to win the game and that will be exactly the case on Thursday, regardless of the result.

"We'll just be focussed on winning both games.

"We're going to attack and score as many goals as we can and try to win the games.

"There's going to be times where game management will come in without any shadow of a doubt and, if you're ahead with 10, 15 minutes to go in the second-leg, then it becomes a different nature to the game.

"We're very much focussed on tomorrow, starting well, putting in a good performance and we're confident if we do that we'll come out with a positive result.

"We've been effectively playing knockout football for the last four games, because if we would have lost or drawn we wouldn't have made the Playoffs.

"We've had that pressure, the players have thrived off that and we can just continue that heading into these Playoff games.

"They are really looking forward to the game, they've trained ever so well this week and we now just need to channel that into a good performance tomorrow.

"I must say congratulations to Port Vale for making the Playoffs because they've been very consistent all season, they are really organised as a group, it looks like a really committed group and they are very functional in what they do.

"They deserve to be in the Playoffs, as we do, and I'm looking forward to two good games.

"We know what we need to do from a tactical perspective. We are very clear on the game-plan and how we're going to play.

"We will enjoy the occasion, embrace the challenge and go and deliver and go and perform."
