A great performance sees Town keep their place in the FA WNL Cup

28 August 2023

Swindon Town secured a 1-4 victory after a fantastic performance at Rectory Park against Actonians Ladies in the determining round of the WNL Cup.

The game saw Annie Colston grabbing her first hat trick of the season and Holly Beck-Esson making it onto the scoresheet to round off a brilliant performance.

Town had to maintain an early spell of control, with the best opportunity coming to Actonians, making Georgina Hunt make a spectacular save on her debut for Town.

After a quiet 45 minutes, the first goal came for Town just before the half-time whistle, with Annie Colston scoring a wonder goal from a corner.

Billie Haynes crossed the ball which found Colston in a dangerous position inside the penalty box as she managed to bend her body to get the ball behind her and unleashed a strike into the top left corner.

However, it was Town who conceded a late equaliser just seconds before the whistle to level the game at half-time.

With a lack of goal-scoring threat in the first moments of the half, it didn’t take long for Town to get back onto the scoresheet with Colston securing her second of the game after a brilliant curled shot found the bottom right-hand corner.

Town received a penalty shortly after, but unfortunately, Meg Jarvis was unable to convert from the penalty spot.

An 87th minute hat-trick was completed by Colston, after a misplaced pass by the opposition defence left the forward with a simple open strike to make it four goals in two games for the striker.

With only seconds remaining on the clock, Beck-Esson would round off the game with a well-taken fourth goal, making no mistakes with the follow-up from the goalkeeper to put the game to bed.

Town will now take all confidence from this game as they look ahead not only the next round of the WNL Cup but also, to their next upcoming fixture against Exeter City.
