Flynn: Fans deserved appreciation

The gaffer reflects on Colchester game postponement

6 August 2023

Michael Flynn praised the over 800 Swindon fans who made the trip to Colchester, following the game's postponement on Saturday.

The decision was eventually made, following a 2:30pm pitch inspection and the Town boss was in full agreement with referee Anthony Backhouse to call the game off 30 minutes before kick-off:

He said: You couldn't have played on there, I've never seen anything like it!

"The referee acted sensibly, and I've got to give him credit for that, but the conditions out there would've killed our game and how we wanted to play.

"You're not playing football on that pitch and from Colchester's side, it could've ruined their pitch for the rest of the season; my only thoughts are to the fans who travelled down."

Flynn also praised the attendance of those Swindon supporters who made the journey to Essex, with he and his players/staff showing their appreciation by applauding supporters whilst departing the Jobserve Community Stadium.

The Town boss said: "It's not one of the closest journeys we could have had postponed, but it is what it is and we look forward to Peterborough on Tuesday.

On the decision to applaud supporters, he explained: "I wanted to show my appreciation, I want the fans with us and I want them to get behind the boys and if I hadn't done that, I wouldn't be true to my word.

"We really appreciate their spending their hard-earned money and I'm gutted for them because it's a long journey.

"The least we could do is go out there and make sure every player and staff member went out there and showed their appreciation."

Despite the postponement, Flynn is confident this will be a positive decision in the long-term, providing him and the players more time and opportunity to gel as a group.

He explained: "The game being called off is not going to define our season.

"It just means we have to come here on a Tuesday night later in the season when hopefully we'll be in an even better position than we would've been today because we'd have been together longer."

Post-match, the Swindon boss was also given the opportunity to discuss the latest signing Benn Ward, a season-long loan signing from Premier League side Burnley, with Flynn "looking forward to working with him":

"Benn is very highly thought of, he's aggressive in the air, left-footed, and he likes to come out with the ball.

"Burnley have been very good with him and looked after him with the deal so I've got to thank them for that.

"I've been watching Benn for a while and he'll fit in with what we are trying to build.

"He is versatile and he fits into our style of play and philosophy and I look forward to working with him."

Attention now switches to Tuesday night's Carabao Cup tie away at League One side Peterborough, with Flynn suggesting there will be some changes to his plans following the Colchester postponement:

"For me, the league is always the priority but I'll have to think about that.

"It might be one or two changes to what I would've gone with against Colchester, but we'll see."

Despite the player's frustrations that the Colchester game was called off, Flynn is adamant that he will continue to concentrate on what will be his long-awaited Town debut against the Posh on Tuesday night:

"The players are frustrated because they wanted to play.

"I'm sure this is the longest debut a manager has to wait for his first professional game!

"But it is what it is, it can't be helped and I'm not one of these to worry about spilt milk.

"I'm one who will worry about the things he can affect, rather than things he can't and the weather is definitely one I can't affect!"
