Flynn: Goals change games

The gaffer reflects on Saturday's 2-2 draw

13 August 2023

Michael Flynn saw a lot of positives from his side's opening day 2-2 draw with Crewe Alexandra at the County Ground on Saturday.

Town's strong showing gave them a two-goal cushion, with debut goals for Udoka Godwin-Malife and Jake Young just after half-time, but Crewe responded with two later goals to see the game finish as an entertaining draw.

At 2-1, Swindon had the opportunity to put the game to bed, with skipper Charlie Austin's chance but this moment as Flynn explains, will be a chance to learn and something that the team overall will work on to improve.

He said: "Goals change games.

"If Chaz puts that chance away and makes it 3-1, it's game over.

"But there were some unbelievable passages of play, with some really good performances, but we've conceded two poor goals."

"The only thing we didn't do is kill them off, we should've scored more!

"I thought we were outstanding, I know it got a little bit too open and that's where at 2-0 up, we should slow the game down.

"We played into their hands at times and it became a lot to ask for the midfielders and the strikers to keep pressing and sometimes we've just got to have a bit of nous.

"There were some real positives and I'm not going to be too despondent in terms of the result.

"They know my thoughts but we know there are things to work on, which is the way it was going to be anyway.

"It's a young group and they're going to keep learning."

Flynn made three changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Peterborough in the Carabao Cup in midweek, with Benn Ward, George McEachran and Jacob Wakeling all coming in to the starting line-up, as the Town boss explains that fitness currently is a mixed bag at the moment.

Flynn explains: "Benn Ward had a back spasm after 15 minutes, so he was struggling and we had to change him.

"Tyriq needs to get fitter and he's held his hands up to that, he's come in late, he hasn't had a full pre-season.

"George (McEachran) comes in for Kins (Liam Kinsella) because he's a very important player for us and I knew I would only get 70, 75, 80 minutes out of him because of illness."

One player who missed out entirely was Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, a decision which Flynn would later explain in his post-match thoughts:

"Rush is not far away, it was more of a precaution.

"He had a bit of swelling after Tuesday night and for the sake of one game, maybe two, I'm not going to risk it."

An exciting first game for Swindon to kick off their 23/24 league campaign, but with there being plenty of football left to play, it's something that Flynn knows his side will need to take in their stride if they are to achieve the success they target for this season:

"I don't think anybody thinks it's going to go seamlessly.

"There's nothing I can do with expectation.

"They've (fans) have seen a very, very good football match, albeit we didn't get the three points, we played some exciting, we played some unbelievable football.

"It's going to be a roller coaster, I don't think it's ever been anything different here has it?"
