Town prevail on derby day

27 August 2023

Swindon were victorious on derby day, after a hat-trick from Abu Kanu and a goal of the season contender from Fletcher Hubbard secured a 4-1 win away to Oxford United.

The first goal for Swindon Town came within in the first 10 minutes, with Hubbard scoring an early goal-of-the-season contender.

Joel McGregor played the ball to Hubbard who shrugs his man off and cuts in from the right-hand side as he unleashed a venomous strike that would leave the Oxford goalkeeper routed to the spot.

The action for Town wouldn’t stop there, as midway through the first half, Jaxon Brown made a sensational run, all the way into the six-yard box where he squared it to Kanu who poked it home.

With a two-goal advantage within the first 30 minutes Sean Wood and his side didn’t stop there as in the dying embers of the half Kanu would use his body well to win a penalty for Town.

Kanu would also take the penalty and see his penalty saved but would not let the goalkeeper get the rebound as he smashed it into the back of the net.

This would be the last of the action for the first half as Town continued their performance levels in the following 45.

As action got underway for the second half, eyes would all be on Kanu who was looking to secure his first hat-trick of the season.

The number nine wouldn’t disappoint as he latched on to a mistake from the Oxford defenders and wouldn’t think twice about catching the Oxford goalkeeper off his line with a brilliant finish from outside the box.

Town would, unfortunately, concede moments later after a nice bit of play from Oxford opened the defence and allowed Oxford's Max Smith to find nothing more than a consolation for the U's.

After a quiet final 20 minutes, it would be Town goalkeeper Redman Evans who would produce two brilliant saves to make sure that Oxford only scored one goal and leave the scoreline as a comprehensive 4-1 to Town come the final whistle.

Following this positive result, Swindon U18s now look ahead to their next game in the Youth Alliance League against Newport in two weeks' time.
