Swindon Town hold on for thrilling win with late comeback

Women notch four to power past St Austell and claim all three points…

Swindon Town Women emerged 4-3 victors over bottom of the table AFC St Austell as the Robins equalled last season’s win total with 15 games left to play on Sunday.

Annabelle Colston had put Swindon ahead after just three minutes before the visitors turned the game on it’s head to lead 2-1 at the break.

But Megan Attenborough replied with a brace to put Town back in front before Lucy Durham added a fourth.

A 93rd-minute goal for St Austell proved to be nothing more than a consolation as they ran out of time to find an equaliser.

Manager James Lally made three changes ahead of the clash as Gipsy Viveash and Ella Harries returned to the side, while goalkeeper Grace Khazir was handed a league debut.

A quick start to the game saw Swindon take a deserved lead after just three minutes as Colston finished from close range after meeting a lofted cross from Helena Diaz-Butcher.

Their hard work was undone though by a loose pass at the back which gifted St Austell possession. The visitors needed no second invitation and equalised in clinical fashion as they countered with precision.

Just before the half-hour mark, St Austell completed the turnaround and headed home from a corner to put the team who have won just one league game all season in front.

Half-time gave Swindon the chance to reset and they soon found their groove again.

In the 75th-minute, Kat Bach fed Diaz-Butcher down the flank and the winger earnt her second assist of the afternoon as her cut-back was steered into the net by the waiting Attenborough to make it 2-2.

With momentum now on their side, Swindon continued to attack and just five minutes later, Attenborough would secure her brace and give her side the lead.

Colston turned provider and headed the ball through to Attenborough who made no mistake when one-on-one with the St Austell keeper.

The lead was stretched to two as Attenborough added an assist to her brace by setting up Lucy Durham who, after a scramble in the box, scored her first goal for Swindon with just three minutes of normal time remaining.

A 93rd-minute free kick was lofted in and before Swindon could clear the ball, St Austell managed to loop the ball into the net to make it 4-3.

The final whistle went soon after as Swindon managed to hold onto to a much-needed win as they moved up to fifth in the table before their forthcoming away fixture to table-toppers Cardiff City.

Swindon Town Line-up: Khazir, Viveash, Bowden, Harries, Gray (Durham 70), Bach (Donnelly 78), Goodright, Taylor (Bent 70), Colston, Diaz-Butcher, Attenborough.
