Flynn: "All About Getting Minutes"

Boss looks ahead to latest pre-season friendlies

17 July 2023

Michael Flynn knows how important this week of pre-season will be, with games against Bristol City, Hereford and Eastleigh all just around the corner.

And he expects his side to build fitness levels after last Saturday's pre-season fixture with Championship side Swansea City at their Fairwood training ground last Saturday.

Attention now turns to tomorrow's pre-season fixtures against Bristol City and Hereford FC, with the Bristol City fixture played behind closed doors, ticket details for the Hereford fixture are available here.

The Town boss said: “The first half I was really, really happy with, we played some outstanding stuff.

“I would say we were probably the better team in the first half. We conceded what I would say usually is a poor goal just before the end of the half, which was a little bit disappointing because we were too slow to react to the short corner, but that comes with a little bit more communication.

“It wasn't anything tactically or something that we hadn't worked on, it's just simple communication with each other and just being that little bit sharper to sense the danger.

“The first half I was really, really happy with, we played some outstanding stuff."

“But other than that the patterns of play were good, the understanding between units was good and we'd got into quite a few goalscoring opportunities but didn't really capitalise on them.

“The second half was a lot different, we changed it around a lot. We played the last 10 minutes with 10 men. We had 16-year-olds, trialists, but the first half was the one I was more concerned about."

Swindon will be without Tom Clayton and Reece Devine for the foreseeable future following knocks picked up at Swansea last weekend, with the latter picking up a reoccurrence of his hamstring injury that Flynn believes will be a "real test of character."

He said: “We're waiting on the full report on Tom Clayton.

"It was very innocuous, but it could be anything, six to 12 weeks and another that's quite broad as it's usually 10 to 12 weeks or four to six weeks, but it could be six to 12.

“Reece Devine has had a really, really bad hamstring tear, so I'm fearing a little bit for Reece because I think that's going to need surgery.

“It's a very tough time for him. He's just been through that rehab. When I was at Walsall, he was going through that rehab and now he's got to do it all again, having just come back.

“It's going to be a real test of character, but the only thing we can do is be here, support him and do what we can, as our duty of care at the football club.

“Swansea were kind enough to ultrasound scan both players after the game which was very helpful.

“We're just waiting on their MRI scan to be done for Tom because there's a little bit of uncertainty in terms of the severity of the injury, but we'll know more soon and look to build from there."
