Swindon Town 3 Plymouth 1 (PSF)

Town round off pre-season in style at the County Ground

29 July 2023

Swindon Town made it a winning end to pre-season, with a 3-1 victory over Championship side Plymouth Argyle.

Goals from Dan Kemp, Rushian Hepburn-Murphy and Jacob Wakeling cancelled out a Morgan Whittaker effort, with Town taking plenty of confidence from their second half display.

It was an even first half with an early spell of pressure for the visitors, but Swindon quickly closed down Plymouth's threat and looked to take the initiative to Arygle instead.

This returned pressure came in the 16th minute, with Charlie Austin firing from 20 yards, but he, unfortunately, dragged his effort wide of the near post.

A couple of half-chances came a minute later following a corner that Plymouth eventually cleared as Town looked to take it up a level.

Plymouth had their best opportunity to open the scoring when Bali Mumba burst forward down the left-hand side 25 minutes in, but the wide-man saw his effort thankfully hit the side netting.

Austin again looked to break the deadlock with another long-range effort 37 minutes in, but his low drive was well-held by Conor Hazard.

A final late chance came when Remeao Hutton's cross picked out Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, but the speedy forward saw his header saved and the play called back for offside.

Half Time: Swindon 0 Plymouth 0

Swindon came out for the second half at another level as they quickly looked to force an opening and they would do just that, through a moment of brilliance from Dan Kemp.

10 minutes and with a corner crossed to where Dan Kemp was lurking, the midfielder hit a beautiful first-time volley that nestled into the bottom left corner.

It wasn't long before Town made it two after a lovely pass from Hutton released Hepburn-Murphy down the right-hand side, the forward made no mistake in finding the bottom corner.

Town almost notched a third goal three minutes after the second, with Austin looking to get on the scoresheet from a tight angle, but Hazard was equal to it and palmed the danger away.

Plymouth responded with a deflected effort from Morgan Whittaker in the 69th minute, but Swindon again applied the pressure with Kemp almost bagging a second four minutes later, forcing a good save from Hazard from close range.

Town did get the third their second half performance deserved after 86 minutes, with substitute Jacob Wakeling showing great composure to drive forward and slot the ball past Hazard just minutes after coming on.

This goal wrapped up what was a brilliant performance from Town as they look ahead to next weekend's opening day Sky Bet League Two fixture at Colchester United.
