Austin agrees contract extension

Forward extends his stay at SN1…

19 May 2023

Swindon Town striker Charlie Austin has extended his stay at the County Ground, agreeing a one-year contract at SN1 which will keep him at the club until the end of the forthcoming 2023/24 EFL Sky Bet League Two campaign, subject to EFL approval.

The talisman burst back onto the scene when he returned to Swindon back in December and was re-introduced to over 11,000 fans as they packed out the County Ground for our League Two fixture against Grimsby Town.

It was the dream return for the striker, as he opened the scoring after just 25 minutes when he met Remeao Hutton’s cross from the right-side.

But the goals didn’t stop there, the forward would go on to make twenty league appearances for the club, netting nine times in fifteen starts and scored four of those against Rochdale in a thrilling 4-4 encounter with the Lancashire based side back in March.

Austin joined Swindon back in December 2022 after agreeing a mutual termination of his contract with A-League side Brisbane Roar and has made 83 appearances for Town in two different spells at the club.

Speaking to the club’s Media Team, the 33-year-old says, “It was a no-brainer, but as things move on in football, my decision come clearer when the direction of the football club changed.”

“They brought the new manager in, Michael Flynn, who is someone I’m really looking forward to working with and when they offered me the chance to stay another year, it was one I had to take.”

First-Team Manager, Michael Flynn said: “I’m delighted that Charlie has signed for another year, he knows all about this club and importantly he knows where the back of the net is.

He’s had an illustrious career and I can’t wait to start working with him. He is someone who will be a figurehead for not only the team, but the club as well moving forward.”

Chief Executive Officer, Rob Angus, said: “It’s great to have Charlie at the club and we are delighted that he will be with us next season.

Charlie is a legend at our club, and we’re excited to have him leading the line for us and helping to push us towards promotion.

This is a great start to the squad that Michael Flynn is building ahead of next season.”
