Swindon Town 4-7 Aldershot Town

Town fail to advance in the Emirates FA Cup

4 November 2023

Swindon Town failed to progress through the first round of the FA Cup after falling to National League side Aldershot Town 7-4.

Aldershot scored three goals in the first 10 minutes before extending their lead to 7-0 in the 51st minute.

Late braces from Charlie Austin and Dan Kemp would be too late for Town to have a chance of coming back into the game.

Swindon made three changes to the starting eleven with Harrison Minturn replacing Tom Clayton at the back, Dan Kemp replaced Rushian Hepburn-Murphy and Kinsella returned to the bench for a now unsuspended Tom Brewitt.

Academy youngsters Fletcher Hubbard and Harry Gray also joined the bench for the side.

It would only take The Shots less than a minute to open their account as Jack Barham would manage to beat Murphy Mahoney from close range.

Barham would get his second moments later, as a mistake from the backline would allow the striker to be clinical yet again to extend their early advantage.

It would be just before the 10th minute of the game when youngster Josh Stokes scores the away side's third with a slick move gifting the away side their third.

Things seemed like they would get better for Town as a controlled 20 minutes from the Reds saw Dan Kemp have an effort inside the penalty area that saw Jordi Van Stappershoef called into action for the first time.

As half-time closed in, it looked like 3-0 would be the score going into the second half but a fourth for The Shots in first-half stoppage time by from Lorent Tolaj would give Aldershot a four-goal lead into the break.

Half-Time: Swindon Town 0-4 Aldershot Town

The second half wouldn’t start any better for Town as a penalty would be awarded to Aldershot after a tackle from Harrison Minturn, which saw ex-Swindon man Cian Harries take the penalty, as he placed it straight down the middle sending Mahoney the wrong way.

Tolaj would extend the lead even further with a well-taken volley into the top right corner extending their lead to six just after the 50th minute.

Barham would complete his hat trick in the 58th minute of the game as Aldershot would be 7-0 up inside 60 minutes.

The game would quieten until around the 75th minute Dan Kemp would finish with style as he would take on two defenders before placing it into the bottom left late on in the game.

It would be Kemp again minutes later that would pull another one back with an instinctual shot finding the bottom right from the outside of the box.

After some late changes, Charlie Austin would score after a ball from Remeao Hutton found the skipper who made no mistake in beating the goalkeeper with a powerful header.

The last piece of action would be yet another goal from Austin who replicated his first goal, late into second-half stoppage time as Town would crash out of the cup after a disappointing 7-4 scoreline and look for a response in Tuesday night's league trip to Colchester United.
