Town's youngsters progress to the FA Youth Cup third round comfortably

16 November 2023

Swindon Town U18s cruised to the FA Youth Cup third round with a 5-0 victory over Wimborne Town U18s at The County Ground on Wednesday evening.

Fletcher Hubbard opened the scoring for Town in the 24th minute before Conor Britchford-Stanley doubled the lead just before half-time.

Miles Obodo scored a brace on either side of the halves, before substitute Joel McGregor wrapped up the win with a late fifth to see Swindon progress to the third round of the FA Youth Cup.

It was the away side who started brightly, with Swindon's youngsters defending resolutely to see out their early pressure within the first seven minutes.

However, Town's youngsters responded to the initial pressure, with their best chance of the game so far falling in the eighth minute to the returning Josh Keyes, with an effort saved by the Wimborne goalkeeper after a good build-up by Redman Evans and Fletcher Hubbard.

Keyes again caused problems, as he had another chance to open the scoring 12 minutes in, with a deflected pass reaching the midfielder who looked to lift the ball over the Wimborne keeper, who held his ground and saved his effort again.

Within the next 10 minutes, two more chances fell Swindon's way with midfielders Jaxon Brown and Alistair Stewart looking to open the scoring, however, both were unfortunate to do so until fellow midfielder Hubbard went a step further and opened the scoring 24 minutes in.

Looking dangerous early on, Hubbard picked up the ball on the edge of the area, before he whipped a threatening ball into the Wimborne area, before a Wimborne defender's deflection helped the ball into the back of the net, and give Swindon a deserved lead midway through the first half.

Straight from the goal, Swindon looked to push on and score further, with just a minute later, goalscorer Hubbard's free-kick reaching Sonny Hart, who unfortunately saw his header go just off-target.

14 minutes later, Town made it two with goalscorer from the current game and goalscorer from the previous round, Conor Britchford-Stanley finding Swindon's second towards the end of the first half.

More clever wing play from Hubbard allowed the winger to beat two Wimborne challenges, before laying the ball across to his opposite number to drive into the box and tap home from close range.

There was still time late on in the first half to find a third for Swindon's youngster, with recent first-team debutant Miles Obodo to find himself on the scoresheet, after more impressive work from Fletcher Hubbard.

Similar to the second goal, after beating his defenders with clever trickery, Hubbard laid the ball off for Obodo to poke the ball home from close range and give Town a resounding half-time lead going into the break.

Half-time: Swindon Town U18s 3 Wimborne Town U18s 0

The second half started and Swindon continued to push for a bigger lead and had numerous opportunities early on, with Obodo forcing a good save from Wimborne's Tom Thorne to deny him a second in the 56th minute.

Josh Keyes saw an effort crash back off the crossbar in the 62nd minute before a couple of changes were introduced for the latter stages of the game.

One of those substitutes Joel McGregor was involved in Swindon's fourth goal just moments after coming on, with Obodo finding himself on the scoresheet for the second time in the 77th minute.

McGregor began the move with a neat ball to Hubbard, who set the ball through to Keyes, who finally laid the ball across to Obodo who was in the right place at the right time to smash the ball into the top right corner and round off a well-worked team goal.

To finalise the resounding performance from Town's youngsters, McGregor went a step better and found himself able to get on the scoresheet in the 85th minute and wrapped a pleasing performance overall, poking home after good work from full-back Liam Hutt and left Town looking ahead to who they will now face in the third round of the FA Youth Cup.

Before that, Swindon Town U18s now look to their next Youth Alliance League fixture this Saturday at home to Exeter City, before discovering their FA Youth Cup third-round opponents over the next few weeks.
